Moringa is the next big superfood.

In recent news, a new superfood has arrived on the scene, and it’s called moringa. It’s becoming the next big superfood, and it’s appearing in many different products on the market including health and wellness products, nutritional products, hair products, and even skin care products. It’s one of nature’s best-kept-secrets used for centuries for it’s nutritional and medicinal properties. Discover why moringa is the next big superfood in this in-depth look with Phyzix MD doctor and formulator, Dr. Jeff Davis.

Moringa Olifera

What is moringa, and why should you know about it?

Moringa Olifera, moringa’s scientific name, is a fast growing tree native to India and parts of Africa. The immature seed pods called “drumsticks” are often boiled and added to curry. Just about every part of this plant is used by the indigenous people where it grows. The leaves are nutritious and often thought to increase iron. The seeds are pressed for their oils. Even the leftover pods can be used to filter water and make it potable for animal and human use.

What makes moringa a superfood though?

Superfoods are those that are nutritionally dense and have a high amount of antioxidants. Let’s take a look at what 100g of dried moringa leaves provides:

9x the protein of yogurt

10x the Vitamin A of carrots

15x the potassium of bananas

17x the calcium of milk

12x the vitamin C of oranges

25x the vitamin C of spinach

With 2 grams of fiber and only 6 net carbohydrates, it’s easy to see why the moringa plant is considered a superfood.

Beyond its nutrient value, what are some of the uses of moringa?

A 2016 animal study Moringa Oliferashowed anti-diabetic properties in insulin resistant rats. Insulin resistance is the fundamental problem in the development of type II diabetes.

A more recent study (2018) demonstrated that nanized particles of moringa suppressed the secretion of inflammatory factors from keratinocytes and macrophages.

What are the typical doses of moringa?

Supplementation starts with 300 to 500 mg of moringa leaf powder. The recommended dose is 1 capsule twice a day.

Are there any side effects?

Since moringa has the potential ability to decrease insulin resistance, it may drop your blood sugar too low. Talk to your doctor if you are experiencing this and before making any changes to your medication.

Moringa also has the potential for decreasing blood pressure, so the same warning applies.

In summary, moringa is an amazing plant that grows in areas with very little rainfall. The entire plant can be used for various purposes. As a food source, the leaves are not only nutritious from a macronutrient standpoint but also packed with antioxidants and macronutrients!
